Graduation...its hard to believe

It is really hard for me to believe that I am graduating from college in less than 2 weeks. I honestly feel like I just got to Mizzou last year. Although I am ready to be done with class, test, and homework...I don't think I am ready for the so called "real world". I have been reflecting back on my last four years and realized I have grown so much as a person, not only that I have also met my best friends here. As the days go by faster I begin to become sadder because it is going to be so weird to wake up in the morning with out my best friends in the rooms next to me. This has been the best four years of my life and I hope everyone who is younger will cherish every moment they have before they graduate because even though you think it is taking for ever, it will blow by before your eyes. I know this is a sappy blog, but I can't believe this part of my life is coming to a quick end!

Writing Portfolio

After reading Chapter 14 in our book I have decided to compile a print portfolio. I feel it will be easier for me to compile this type of portfolio because I have already started to print somethings out. I have also worked on these types of portfolios in the past so I have some experience that will help me. I also feel this type of portfolio will be more beneficial for me in the future. I will most likely put all of the sections of my portfolio in a binder of some sort with page protectors on each document making it easier to organize. I hope this assignment will come together easily because I have so much going on right now with all of my classes and the next two weeks will be very stressful!

Securing a Job

I think I have finally been able to secure a job after I graduate in just a few short weeks. I have been talking with the Managing Director at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network here in Columbia. I would be their Director of Recruiting and Development. I have been able to come to the office and shadow someone while they were making calls and conducting recruiting interviews. I really think this job fits well with me and the type of person I am. Today I also had a phone interview with one of the ladies in the St. Louis office. The interview went really well and I feel very confident about it. I look forward to finally getting a job, but I am kind of scared to grow up to be honest!

National Treasure

My roommates and I watched National Treasure last night. I remember when the previews came out for this movie, and I thought it looked really good. I really enjoyed the movie and found that it was even better than I thought. It was a Disney movie, and I was unaware of this when we rented it, but it actually was a great adult movie. I heard they were going to go through a different name until they found out that they got their PG rating. Although it was PG it was still very intense with several chase scenes including shooting. No one was every shot and they never showed any blood and no foul language was used. There was also a love story twisted into the storyline, I really liked this element and it made the chase scenes a little more intense knowing they were fighting for eachother. It is very interesting to think about the details of the storyline. The movie made we wonder if something like this could actually happen, or if this story could actually be true. If you have never seen it, I suggest you rent it and check it out.

Destiny Advertising, Inc.

I really enjoyed our job search process we performed in class last Thursday. I have put my resume on Monster and Career Builders, but I have never really found the time to sit down and search the available jobs that are interesting to me. I found a job on Monster for an entry level marketing and sales position. The position is with Destiny Advertising, Inc. and is located in Kansas City! This job search process is very real for me, because I graduate in less than a month and I have yet to find a job. I have somethings I am working on, so hopefully one of them will work out.

When it comes to my resume I feel very prepared. I have worked hard on perfecting my resume, and making sure that it looks very professional. I have realized that maybe I could tweak it a little more, by making it a little more creative. I am an Advertising major so this could be an easy way to for me to show my creativity. I really liked the resume on the CD for our class that showed the women's eyes, I am thinking about trying to do this with my resume. It is a very subtle way to make yourself stand out amongst the rest.

Job Searching

I am officially starting to freak out about finding a job before I graduate. I have had an interview where I actual went through two rounds of interviews; however I still have not heard about the job. They told me they would let me know about it by April 17th, but it is getting hard to wait. I also have an interview lined up with Northwestern Mutual Financial as their Recruiter. I was wondering if any one had friends or family in the Marketing/Advertising fields. If you do, would you please let me know!!! I need all the help I can get!

Resume Course Proposal

I have proposed an 8 week Resume Course to the English Department. I wrote a first draft, then revised it. After incorporating the changes I wrote my second draft. We then did peer reviews where I recieved helpful feedback. After looking at the feedback I reassessed my proposal and turned it into a webpage. After finishing the project I did a student assessment of my writing in a business letter format. This project was very interesting and I feel that I learned a wide array of information from it.

Spring Break '06

I had a complete blast on our trip to Paradise Island, Bahamas. It took an entire day to get there (we had 2 connected flights on the way down there), but once we go there all the hassle seemed well worth it!We stayed in this really cool beach club where we had a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo, it worked out great since we had five girls. We went to the beach everyday from 10-5 and then most days we took a little power nap before we went to dinner and out on the town. We were able to go to a lot of amazing restaurants where we were able to enjoy the Bahamian experience at its fullest. There several different clubs that you could go to, however we always ended up at this Club Waterloo. Waterloo stayed open till 4am, and actually we closed it down one night and they stayed open till about 5 just for us!! It was an amazing way to top of my senior year with some of my best friends. The ocean was beautiful, a little cold, but beautiful. The waves were huge and they were a lot of fun to play around in. Paradise Island isn't very big so we were able to walk to the entire beach side of the island (it may sound easy, however it takes a toll on your legs!). We also had an amazing bar by our pool where we were able to get lunch and some frozen drinks everyday. Overall it was so much fun and I wish I could do it again every year.

English Proposal Cont.

After writing my first two rough drafts for our proposals, I think I have finally figured out exactly what the assignment is. I started to work on my webpage and it is coming along quite well; however it is kind of difficult to work on it because I am still having lots of trouble getting bengal to work on my computer at home. I am hoping that I can get everything figured out this weekend so I can wrap this project up!

Proposal Idea and Questions

When I was faced with the assignment for our proposal, I truly had no idea what to write about. I then started to think about topics that would help me in my career search. I think the English department should have an 8 week course that focuses entirely on resumes, cover letters, and job searching online. This would be a very helpful course for all students and it would be best if students were asked to take it their senior year. This course would better equip us for our career search. I know that we have a short discussion over resumes in this course, however there are many other parts to the job search that would be helpful too. So my proposal is: Create an 8 week course focusing entirely on resumes, cover letter, and any other career search related material.

The only question I have is about the web page design. I am not very familiar with this type of format or design layout, so I am hoping that we will discuss this in further detail and possibly go over how to do it.
