My first interview and the advice they gave me...
So, I had my first interview today. I was selected to attend a Career Day at the Kansas City Star for a position in advertising sales. It was really interesting and went way above what I expected. It lasted from 8:00-4:30, so I was thinking, “Oh great this is going to take forever, it is going to be the longest day of my life”. But, to my surprise it went by really fast and it was very enjoyable. We were able to see al of the different sections the Star has to offer including retail, classified, special sections, magazines, and online. This really opened my eyes to all of the different sections the Star has to offer. The Kansas City Star is also getting ready to open their new press building that will house the newest press in the world!

I then had two separate interviews where in each interview there were two people interviewing me, it was intimidating at first but it went over pretty well. I really enjoyed talking to the sales managers and I really felt like we had a good connection, but I guess I will have to wait and see.
Later in the afternoon we were able to hear from two of the companies top sales trainers, which was very informative. They gave some really great advice about interviewing and what they look for personally in resumes and cover letters, and I have to say the presentation we had on Thursday hit the resume right on. They told us they are looking for What’s In It For Them, what will they gain by hiring you. They said you can’t just list features you have to let them know the benefits of your features and how it will make their company more successful! They also stressed keeping in touch with the people you meet, networking is the key to success in the corporate world.
Overall I felt like the day was a complete success and I am hoping that something great will come out of this opportunity.
